History

Some attribute the name of Mint Hill to a former gold mint, but a prominent tale points to Joshua Waters, one of the area’s first postmasters. He was asked to suggest a name for the town, and he suggested Mint Hill because he grew mint on the hill located behind his house. Mint Hill was officially incorporated in 1971, with a population of 2,284 at the time. The town has seen steady growth since that day, and now hosts approximately 25,000 residents. The Mint Hill Historical Society educates residents and visitors about the area’s history through live demonstrations and events throughout the year. They also host a seasonal farmers’ market at the Carl J. McEwen Historical Village, which reflects rural life in early Mint Hill with a restored country doctor’s office, a one-room schoolhouse, a country store, and more.
